I underwent spinal fusion 5 years ago.The 5mg. vicodin turned into 10 mg.,and I got addicted very easily.My whole life revolved around getting a supply of it.I couldn’t take the prescribed amount because it had no effect.I went on to Oxycontin,and Fentynil patches….I abused them all.Finally.after my worst withdrawal-I started Methadone.I’m at 30mg a day.I have to decrease my dosage VERY slowly to avoid the agonizing sckness.Is there any other way to stop?

I don’t know if you can do this but I know that when people go off drugs like oxycontin or fentanyl now, they are given buprenorphine (not methadone). Buprenorphine (“Bup”) (also called suboxone) can be prescribed in a doctors office so you can get a full months supply like any other med. It is supposed to be much easier to go off Bup than methadone. You would go through withdrawal if you stopped cold-turkey but people I know who tapered it off according to their doctors’ instructions didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms (and it doesn’t take very long to cut the dose to zero).. I just wonder if you could go from methadone to Bup and then off the Bup. Some doctors like to keep patients on bup because it’s supposed to cut down on drug cravings (not sure about this) but it is true that you can’t be impulsive, go buy drugs and use them while taking Bup. You won’t get sick. They just won’t work and you will have wasted your money.
