…to MDs “herding” into prescribing the same diagnosis, treatment and particularly medication?
I am thinking particularly of psychiatry, but perhaps this phenomenon happens in other medical areas?
As a patient and a 20-year attendee at AA meetings where many are prescribed psycho-active medications, over the years I have seen the usual diagnosis and prescribed drugs change, an pretty much in unison. Lets see. First it was Valium Then, “clinical depression”, with Xanax being the ‘sober’ drug of choice — and often abuse, followed by Prozac and the other SSRI’s. The there was ADD, with Ritalin or other stimulants. I’m surprised to hear so many people regularly take Klonopin, not to mention percoset and other powerful pain medications. There are even “Pain Clinics” which advertise “On-site Dispensing” in display ads in our local weekly , right next to the “Massage” ads. And of course California’s “Madical Marijuana Dispensaries”.

Alcohol Treatment Clinics: Choosing in-Patient Alcohol Treatment Clinics
Many people have an alcoholic drink when they go out. A certain level of social drinking is normal and not usually a problem but if it becomes very regular and begins to spiral out of control then it may be time to beat the booze.
There are ways to stop drinking and help is out there to support you through this process. If you think you may have become addicted to or dependent on alcohol it is best to seek the advice and support of professionals, as unmanaged detoxification can be dangerous.

Drug Addiction Program: Drug Addiction Programs – Doing What Nothing Else Can
No matter what means they employ, drug addictions programs all have the same end in mind: the safe arrival of their participants at an emotionally healthy and substance-abuse free life. It’s a noble goal, but not one easily achieved.
Substance abusers become addicted both mentally and physically to their drugs of choice; so their recovery requires not only that the physical cravings for the drug be eliminated, but that reasons for their emotional dependency on it are uncovered and eradicated as well. Treatment centers offering drug addicting programs must not only help the addicts withdraw from their drugs; they must offer behavioral therapy which will allow the addicts to choose for themselves sobriety as their preferred way of life.
Because drug addiction programs must be also prepared to deal with those who have been medically ravaged by their substance abuse, they need staff capable of performing medical examinations. Hepatitis and HIV tests are a given for anyone entering a drug addiction program.
