Objective: Disulfiram is a one of the few pharmacotherapies for cocaine addiction that shows promise. Since disulfiram and cocaine both affect levels of global methylation we hypothesized the MTHFR gene, whose product is involved in supplying methyl groups for DNA and protein methylation, may be associated with responsiveness to disulfiram in cocaine-dependent individuals. Methods: Sixty-seven cocaine-dependent patients were stabilized on methadone for 2?weeks and then randomized into disulfiram (250?mg/day, N?=?32) and placebo groups (N?=?35) for 10?weeks. Patients were genotyped for the MTHFR (rs1801133, also known as C677T) polymorphism and the data was evaluated for association with cocaine-free urines in the disulfiram or placebo groups. Data from patients that completed all 10?weeks of the study (N?=?56) were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), corrected for population structure. Results: The CT or TT MTHFR genotype group (N?=?32) dropped from 73 to 52% cocaine-positive urines on disulfiram (p?=?0.0001), while the placebo group showed no treatment effect. The CC MTHFR genotype group (N?=?24) showed a smaller, but still significant, reduction in cocaine-positive urines on disulfiram compared to placebo; 81-69% (p?=?0.007). Conclusion: This study indicates that a patient’s MTHFR genotype may be used to identify individuals who might show improved response to disulfiram treatment for cocaine dependence. Resolved Question: My Husband Is Addicted to Pain Killers?
Resolved Question: My husband is addicted to pain killers?
My husband is addicted to pain pills? My husband is addicted to pain pills which not surprisingly is ruining our lives… We have a 2 year old together. He works with my father. My husband has admitted he has a problem and has gone to see a therapist who is referring him to a specialist and telling him to go NA meetings. But I feel he is still lying his work has suspended for 5 days because he wil go a coke binge when he can’t feel the perks he doesn’t show to work or even come home. He is upset with me because I told my parents but I felt alOne n needed to talk to someone. I’m not sure how to act around my husband he is distance and mean, rude he doesn’t pay attention to our daughter or me. He freaks out on the smallest things but won’t say sorry when his wrong, and literally sleeps all day and stays up all night. I’m not sure if I should leave him or stay with and be strong. I feel lost and miserable. Is this normal behavior for someone withdrawing? Or is he still lying and doing them at night… Some advice from anyone would really help me out now….

What Do Pain Pills Do to Your Cardio?
Question by Bobby: What do pain pills do to your cardio?
I train in MMA (not that good, just enjoy it), and sometimes you get pretty sore and endure some pain. Do prescription pain pills, or even just over-the-counter medicines have detrimental effects on your cardio? I ask because I have heard that your body actually goes into “detox” mode to flush them out, which then slows you down. Thanks.

If you use them sporadically.. (not very often) — Then regardless of the medication.. no, it will not effect any part of your body if you are other wise healthy.
Now, for more chronic use.. it goes something like this:
For all pain relievers , if used more than once every 10-14 days, there are quite a few theories in the scientific community that support the idea that your pain threshold is lowered due to the use. Especially of narcotic pain relievers.. ie: Opiates — e.g.: Lortab, Vicodin, Oxycontin, Codeine, etc.

Opiates – Opioid – Opiates Detox – Opiate Addiction
Opiates – Opioid – Opiates Detox – Opiate Addiction – www.opiates.com Opiate addiction is recognized as a central nervous system disorder, caused by continuous opiate intake. After prolonged opiate use, the nerve cells in the brain, which would otherwise produce endogenous opiates (natural painkillers, or endorphins), cease to function normally. The body stops producing endorphins because it is receiving opiates instead. The degeneration of these nerve cells causes a physical dependency to an external supply of opiates. Abrupt or sudden abstinence from opiates induces yet another traumatic disorder – withdrawal syndrome.
