Medical and Nutrition Field Against the Inhumane Treatment of Animals?

Question by mellowbello88: Medical and Nutrition field against the inhumane treatment of animals?
I’m researching the inhumane treatment of animals and I would like to know if anyone knows where I could possibly find views from the medical and nutrition field, like articles, quotes etc., from those who have R.D.s and Ph.D.s etc. Hopefully along the lines of saying, going vegetarian will help save so-and-so amount of animal lives each year…etc. Please help!!!

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is a great, unbiased source for information.

Here’s one study that found that beef has an adverse effect on blood pressure and cholesterol. http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/246/6/640?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=vegetarian&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&resourcetype=HWCIT

Here’s one about the effect of dairy and cholesterol levels in vegetarians. By the way, LDL is the bad cholesterol. http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/254/10/1337?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=vegetarian&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&resourcetype=HWCIT

    AGAINST ANIMAL TESTING

“From the perspective of a physician involved in clinical practice, education, and research, I have come to the conclusion that killing and dissecting animals is not only unnecessary, but also counterproductive in the training of physicians and scientists.”
    – David O. Weibers, M.D. (Mayo Clinic)

“Consider just one stark statistic: Today, nine out of 10 compounds developed in the lab fail in human studies. They fail, in large part because they behave differently in people than they did in animal or laboratory tests.”
    – Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., commissioner of food and drugs, U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

VEGETARIANISM IS BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH
Dr. T. Colin Campbell, nutritional researcher at Cornell University and director of the largest epidemiological study in history,
“The vast majority of all cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and other forms of degenerative illness can be prevented simply by adopting a plant-based diet.”

The American Heart Association reports that vegetarians “have a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart disease (which causes heart attacks), high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and some forms of cancer.”
Scientists have found that vegetarians have stronger immune systems than meat eaters do.

Science shows that going vegetarian is perhaps the most effective way to fight global warming.

In a groundbreaking 2006 report, the United Nations (U.N.) said that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. Senior U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization official Henning Steinfeld reported that the meat industry is “one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems.”

Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide together cause the vast majority of global warming. Raising animals for food is one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide and the single largest source of both methane and nitrous oxide emissions.
