Pain killers besides being highly addictive can also hurt certain organs. For example vicodin is acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ocycodone acetaminophen clears your body through the liver, if you take to much or even the directed amount for long periods of time you can damage the liver, usually if a healthy person has their yearly physical and blood work the blood work will show if the liver enzymes are not right. Also the hydrocodone in the vicodin can eat holes in the lining of your stomach causing ulcers to form. If you don’t take pain meds on a normal or regular basis and only take them for a short time while injured you probably won’t have any problems. Also what happens with those types of drugs is your body becomes tolerant to them, which means instead of 1 5/500 vicodin to kill pain you need 2, then after awhile 3, and so on. Yes, I will confess and say I liked the way it made me feel the first time I took vicodin, but the more I used the less euphoric it became.
