Heroin Detoxification: Ways How to Do a Heroin Detox

One of the most difficult things to do is detox from heroin. Heroin is a highly addictive, opiate drug created from a naturally occurring substance called morphine. Morphine is extracted from the seed pods of some varieties of poppy plants and is then processed to create heroin which is typically sold illegally as a sticky, black substance or a white or brownish colored powder which is ingested through a variety of methods.

Heroin detoxification is the first and most important step to a complete recovery from heroin addiction. The elimination of heroin and all of its metabolites from the body greatly increases an addict’s chances for a successful recovery. As long as residual heroin exists within the addict’s body, so will withdrawal symptoms and heroin cravings. Through urination and sweating, the human body is designed to naturally detoxify; however, this process is not instant and the addict will suffer withdrawal symptoms while the body slowly expels remaining heroin residue.

Withdrawal symptoms from heroin addiction can range in severity and lasts from several weeks to months. Some symptoms include loss of bodily functions such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Additionally anxiety, agitation, and depression are common among those suffering from heroin withdrawal during heroin detox. Withdrawal from heroin can also cause serious emotional and physical trauma and sudden detoxification can even be fatal, so it must be done correctly and should always be overseen by a medical professional, whether via an in-patient program or out-patient care.

A detoxification plan often includes the use of other drugs which can help reduce or control cravings and comfort. Additionally, increasing exercise can relieve the anxiety and agitation, while helping the addict sleep at night. Long, hot, Epsom salt baths can also help relieve some discomfort, reducing the need for additional drugs. Although it will not be easy, putting these measures in place, along with some counseling and life support, greatly increase an addict’s chances of freeing themselves from their debilitating addiction.

I am a firm believer that any addict that is any drug addict can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use drugs, and find a new way to live. One way that has been proving itself is the Narcotics Anonymous program. This simple program is based on spiritual principles not religion. NA meetings can be found around the world and best of all it is free. Why not check out a meeting today. This may be the thing that turns your life around.

Good luck
