Can Doctors Prescribe Any Medicine They Want or Do They Have to Meet Requirements?

Question by big matt: Can doctors prescribe any medicine they want or do they have to meet requirements?
Why I’m asking is when I went to see my doc for anxiety he kept on prescribing me SSRI’s which made me faint and are really more for depression which I don’t have and I asked if he could try prescribing me a benzo but he said I’d have to go see a psychiatrist for that and that he doesn’t prescribe them. And my friend has to go see a “suboxone doctor” to get treatment for his ron addiction he can’t just go to any ole doctor so why is this? Do doctors have to be certified to prescribe certain meds or what…..can they prescribe any med they want just they don’t want to?
that doesn’t answer my question genius

It’s possible, though highly unlikely, your doctor doesn’t have the DEA licensure for Schedule III prescriptions. They just aren’t comfortable prescribing them. Writing prescriptions is a big responsibility, and it’s perfectly reasonable for a doctor to draw the line on these things. By the way, drugs marketed as antidepressants (both SSRI’s and tricyclics) are often more effective and a better choice for treating anxiety without depression than are benzodiazepines. You don’t know as much about the subject as your doctor does, and you need to cut him a little slack.
