I took it from 18 through 24 or so. I had chronic asthma at the time, but it was triggered by allergies and exercise in cold dry air. I’m surprised to hear about the asthma risk, since I’ve always been very tuned in to what I’m taking, knowing its side effects, and monitoring how I feel, and I have no recollection of L-Arginine making a difference in asthma or even knowing that it could.
My only personal side effect from L-Arginine was stomach acid at the time. As you’ll notice the bitter taste takes some getting used to. Since it’s been a while, prior to answering I looked it up on the Mayo Clinic website to find out what I didn’t already know, and it mostly appears to have plenty of potential short-term side effects, but I didn’t see any long-term ones.
The Mayo Clinic cites the following side effects:
“Stomach discomfort, including nausea, stomach cramps, or an increased number of stools, may occur. People with asthma may experience a worsening of symptoms, which may be related to allergy, if arginine is inhaled.”
Summarizing the other potential ones: Other potential side effects include low blood pressure, and changes in electrolytes, risk of bleeding, may increase blood sugar levels, may increase potassium levels, may worsen symptoms of sickle cell disease, not recommended as a supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
