Chocolate?

Question by Moth B: Chocolate?
Does chocolate contain nicotine or something? Seriously… I am frightfully addicted to it. I’ve actually gone without it for one day once. I nearly went through two but i think i weakened before 48 hours. It’s pitiful. If I am without chocolate for long periods of time, I start doing cartwheels off the walls. If you have ever seen DeathNote, it’s much like Ryuk’s behavior when he hasn’t had an apple in days.
Any tips, advice, suggestions for overcoming a terrible and drastic chocolate addiction?

Chocolate, or rather cocoa, contains a series of chemicals which have an effect on the brain similar to that of marijuana. In addition, sugar is also addictive. I am a fellow chocoholic, by the way :)

The abuse of any addictive substance usually stems from something not being right, neurochemically. You may be suffer from moodswings, depression (even very, very light), or you may simply be an emotional eater. Chocolate certainly does make us feel good. I also feel that it calms me down.

I was able to control my addiction by taking control, actively, and replacing it with something else, namely exercise, which creates tons of endorphins – “happiness” chemicals that your brain also gets used to. I believe my addiction was almost as serious as yours.

I would suggest you start working out vigerously, if you do not already. If it doesn’t do anything for you, you should consult a doctor. It’s possible you need, or at least could benefit from, a mild or moderate dose of antidepressants for a period of a few months, to help you get over the “hump”.

That said, I still eat chocolate, and any healthy diet can contain some, but I have it under control.

Also, try to “detox” by eating only dark chocolate. 70% cocoa is very good once you get used to it. Right now your pallet is probably attuned to “cocoa-like chocolate” that is not really chocolate. Dark chocolate contains a ton of flavenoids, anti-oxidants, that are very health promoting, and even lower bloodpressure and cholesterol.

Most important of all, you have to figure your new diet, if you keep chocolate in it, to be balanced.

Good luck!
