I’m using a cough syrup called Benadryl (same thing as robitussin) because I have a violent chesty cough. But I was just wondering if it will actually cure my cough, or just relieve it for a period of time?

I was told the Benadryl will make me cough up all the phlegm so there will be none left in my lungs. Thats what the pharmacist told me.

Any over-the-counter medicine will only relieve the symptoms of whatever it is you are dealing with. I’m pretty sure benadryl isn’t going to do much for a cough. It’s used for allergies and in sleep aids as a sedative. Even if you take robitussin, though, your answer is the same; it doesn’t cure the sickness, just masks the symptoms.
