Open Question: Question about joining the service while being an ex-methadone user?
I am 25 years old and am finally in a position to better myself. I have plans to join the service and have already started studding for the ASVAB test to better my odds of getting into a strong military career path. I have one HUGE problem however…I very recently just underwent a two month suboxone detox to wing off of methadone which i have been prescribed at a clinic for the last six years. I am in great physical and mental shape but unfortunately I have a past drug use problem. The reason I was prescribed methadone was because out of high school I abused Oxycontin and the methadone was used to get me off of that. Unfortunately though, myself and my parents had NOOO idea how addicting the methadone was at the time and I made a huge mistake by starting the treatment. Ever since then I have not abused a single drug and have been taking the methadone as prescribed. I’ve wanted to get myself 100% clean for years now and I used the self motivation of joining the military to do so. Two months ago I started a suboxone detox program with a local doctor and I recently just completed the program as planned so as of right now I am 100% clean and 150% ready to better my life. I’m sorry for the rant but to better answer my question you must know my history and know imp not the average junky just looking for an easy way out. I have been dreaming about joining the military and getting clean for years. I was a state champion wrestler in California and have been involved with my local high school wrestling program since high school so I am in good enough shape to start basic training. I believe I can do anything I set mind to but I at least need the chance to finally prove myself. My question is….Is this going to hinder my chances of joining the service or even getting into a special forces unit like I plan?? Is this something I should tell my recruiter about right from the start or do I keep this to myself. Someone recently told me that I won’t be able to join because of my past drug use. I would be absolutely devastated if this was true. I hope someone has some good knowledge on this topic. Thanks!!
