Is It Hard to Get Off of the Medication Seroquel?
Question by Lee: Is it hard to get off of the medication Seroquel?
I’ve been taking the medication seroquel to help me sleep for the past 5 years. I am always tired and have a very hard time getting up in the morning and have other side effects so want to get off of the medicine. I’ve read that there are withdrawal symptoms. I’m wondering if any of you have expereince with getting off of seroquel. I know I have to taper off of it slowly.

Tapering off Seroquel is like tapering down off of any other psychotropic drug. There may be side effects, but often the worst “side effect” people refer to is the return of symptoms they were trying to treat. In your case, your insomnia may return. It is also possible that, after 5 years, whatever was causing your insomnia has been taken care of. Many people take Seroquel for Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder; as you can imagine, the return of THEIR symptoms is more serious than insomnia.
If you begin to experience sleeplessness, talk to your doctor about trying something different like Rozerem, or Trazadone. Both of these meds can be taken for a longer period of time that your typical sleep aid (examples: Lunesta, Ambien, Sonata) or benzodiazepines (examples: Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax).
The other most common side effect of Seroquel withdrawal is nausea/vomiting. You may or may not experience this.
