Do People Change When They Quit or Are Quitting Marijuana?

Question by : Do people change when they quit or are quitting marijuana?
My partner was so sweet, loving and very calm for our first three months together but he used to smoke 8 joints every night! He has cut down to one a night in the last month and now he is sooo agitated angry moody impatient doesn’t listen to me anymore. It’s suddenly all about him. Is this a sign of withdrawals or has he just turned into an a**?

Marijuana has a temporary effect on mood and personality (during the high), but statistics show no legitimate permanent changes in regular pot smokers over time. However, studies do show a correlation between marijuana usage and depression (and other melancholic mental illnesses), so odds are the behavior is actually related to something much deeper — something that might have gotten him into the weed in the first place. Marijuana is also not physiologically addictive, so it doesn’t produce intense physical withdrawal symptoms. It has been known to induce psychological dependencies, but the most “withdrawal” that can put a man through is irritability and headaches. So that could be a factor, but I think it might be deeper. Communication is the best way to solve anything in a relationship. I think you should sit down with him one day and just have a calm, non-defensive discussion about your feelings. Here you can ask him about why he started using marijuana, and if he did it for an escape from negative situations/emotions. Remember, don’t get angry or accusatory — that will only push him away and make him less cooperative. Just talk to him. You do have a right to be annoyed, certainly, but showing that will unfortunately ruin the chance to get down to the truth. Show him you do love him, but are feeling hurt by his recent behavior and want to make life more tolerable for both of you.

“Some marijuana users experience psychological distress following marijuana ingestion, which may include feelings of panic, anxiety, and paranoia. Such experiences can be frightening, but the effects are temporary. Marijuana does not cause profound changes in people’s behavior.”

“A small minority of Americans — less than 1 percent — smoke marijuana on a daily basis. An even smaller minority develop a dependence on marijuana. Marijuana does not cause physical dependence. If people experience withdrawal symptoms at all, they are remarkably mild.”
