Methadone Clinic – Concerns over drug use were front and centre at a community meeting tonight in Old South. Organizers found themselves entering hostile territory at what was supposed to be an information session on a proposed methadone clinic. About 300 people turned out for the meeting at Hillside Church. The event was called by city planning staff to share information about the city’s new methadone clinic by-law and a clinic application for 425 Wharncliffe Road South right next to a Dairy Queen. While the bylaw calls for a 300 metre buffer from schools, parks, and arenas many at the meeting said it ignores children, day cares, and other businesses in the area. A representative for Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres told the crowd there’s high demand for methadone treatment with existing facilities running at capacity.
