Open Question: Does anyone know of a drug testing facility that tests hair and can differentiate between DXM and Opiates?
I live in Milwaukee, WI. I am a methadone patient who hasn’t failed a drug test in 5-years. And that shouldn’t be interpreted as 5-years of using, but not getting caught, lol. I follow my program to a T.
Does anyone know of a place that does hair sample testing for drugs that TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OPIATE AND DXM (DEXTROMETHORPHAN)?
Here’s why:
Years ago I misused pain killers for my back and neck. But now I am getting drug counseling and am at the highest phase (6) of responsibility which basically means I have remained free of illegal drugs and come in once a month to my methadone clinic to discuss addiction-related counseling or things that could set me up for a path of relapse.
At my clinic, I am entrusted with 13-days worth of methadone (btw it’s liquid methadone) and I come in on a 14th day in which I take a dose at the clinic and while there drop off my empty bottles and take home 13 more full bottles. I also get one random call-back each month for a total of 3 visits where I have to give them the whiz quiz.
Anyway, to cut to the chase, during my Sept. 14th monthly meeting, my counselor told me my UA (Urine Analysis) was tested positive for opiates. I was floored. I asked him If I could get a blood test to try to clear the matter up and he said in the past one of the owners of the clinic, a doctor, made a patient get a hair test.
Cool! That sounds like a good idea to me, I thought (at least until I heard some of the prices quoted-this is no Walgreens or CVS take-home drug test here – we’re talking hundreds of dollars, OUCH!).
When I got home I googled possible reasons for getting a positive opiate test. Boom! First hit showed a person telling that his failed UA was from Dextromethorphan (or DXM as kids call it) but showed up as positive for opiate usage. He too was a member of a methadone clinic. I was looking for something that would help me sleep. That’s the reason I looked around and tried Robitussin, and Melatonin, (they didn’t work well, esp. melatonin) and eventually found out about Mucinex and Delsym. Delsym was the preferred choice because it lacked a specific chemical that would likely make the user hurl.
My counselor – who is also boss of the place I go to, (but not the whole chain of clinics) said he was going to work with me an that this was going to be continued – is a cool guy and all but I hope he backs like he said. I haven’t heard anything since my meeting last Friday, and experience tells me not to sit on my ass and wait around. If nothing gets done to prove my innocence, I will go all the way back down to phase 1 and I’ll have to drive there and back every day…and it takes a long time to climb back up the phase tree. I could try cold turkey but it would be a life of hell. I do have another option in Suboxone, but I don’t care for the stuff.
Sorry for the really long post. Massive thanks to anyone who can give some direction.
You know its funny, they have cautionary postings there like beware poppy seeds for they can give a positive result for opiates, but nothing for widespread cough medicine that contains this DXM chemical which will produce the same result. The trick will come down to: can the hair sampler tester tell the difference between DXM and a true opiate; if so, how much will it cost; and of course who foots the bill for this test and what options am I left with if the above doesn’t sort itself out?

The irony is that civilians eligible for Medicaid would get the treatments paid for by the government at any location that operates as a methadone clinic. Green, and other veterans, are not afforded that benefit because they do not quality for Medicaid …
