Alcohol Detox Centers: An Alcohol Detox Center and What It Offers

Detox from alcoholic tendencies is not easy. It signifies the removal of hard liquor from a person’s body – one who has been abusing it for an extended period of time. You can detox your body by not drinking any more alcohol, but this is for people that have not capped the level of addiction yet. For the heavy users, this can be easier said than done. An alcohol also needs to change his or her diet and receive medical assistance, if the issue continues. Family support and motivation from friends along with a strong commitment from the addict will help those who are struggling with the abuse of alcohol.

Detox centers offer help to those who are having a hard time getting rid of this disease. They provide both medical and therapeutic assistance. In the medical scenario, a physician will supervise the detox program. The first organs in the body to administer and control the detox function are the liver and the kidney. This is where most of the alcohol is stored in the body when it is consumed. These are the first two organs to be adversely affected. Some extreme abuse of alcohol will find addicts having to try other detox measures that are more intense and drastic.

In detox centers across America, there are many professionals that volunteer such as nurses, therapists, doctors and pharmacists. If a person is really serious about quitting the destructive abuse of alcohol, they can perform detox in the comfort of their home, but this has to be a determined and disciplined individual, which is not usually the case. In instances, where this has been done, the case is usually moderate use of alcohol.

In detox centers, the hardcore alcohol addict will experience discomfort during the detox phase. They may begin to hallucinate and shake uncontrollably. Some may even exit the treatment program because they are unable to withstand this process. Most of these people have to embrace inpatient care in these examples because they are ill equipped to handle detox on their own. In fact, they cannot even handle walking into a treatment center on their own. Most of the time, family members and friends have to be the ones to get them into treatment.

There are many alcoholics that have to be given medication during the detox process because of their heavy abuse of alcohol. This only compounds the problem, if not monitored, because medication can be another form of addiction once the person has addictive tendencies.

The detox centers are equipped with professionals that can handle all types of cases. The addict is warned beforehand of the side effects of detox such as insomnia, nightmares, edgy, anxiety and shaking. Detox for heavy drinkers may take up to six weeks. Their diet has to be rich with protein, fiber, fluids and water. While the addict is in inpatient detox care, they have to give credence to the professionals that are trained to administer treatment.

The person in detox can also exhibit symptoms and behaviors such as vomiting, fast heart rate and heightened blood pressure. This is why it is important for a physician to be present at all times.
